“The value of education is not learning about the facts but about training our minds to think of something that we cannot learn from our textbooks” Albert Einstein
At the heart of our Social Studies Curriculum is the preparation of students to be future ready global citizens through better appreciation of the interconnectedness of Singapore and the world they live in.
Through inquiry-based authentic learning, Clementians delve into the beautifully woven tapestry of the past, present and future of Singapore throughout their education from Primary 1 to Primary 6. Learning takes place beyond the boundaries of a typical Social Studies classroom. Clementians are engaged in inter-disciplinary field trips which infuse key concepts from various subject domains. Students actively make their learning connections across different subject disciplines. Drawing on the real-life experiences during the field trip, students are in touch with their senses, engage in critical and reflective thinking and are challenged to apply values and concepts in the lives.
Values such as empathy, resilience and respect are the cornerstone of the Social Studies curriculum. Riding on the whole school approach as the foundation of our values education, the Social Studies curriculum offers opportunities for Clementians to be empowered as informed, participative citizens with an impassioned spirit to contribute responsibility to Singapore and the world they live in.
More importantly, Clementians are provided with opportunities to exercise autonomy and take ownership of their learning throughout the curriculum, with bite-sized individual and collaborative inter-disciplinary projects. Our teachers serve as skilful facilitators who would guide them through exploring and discovering the complex tensions faced by Singapore and around the world. While Social Studies is a non-examinable subject, Clementians take pride in their work as they participate in purposeful conversations, role-plays and debates with their peers and teachers. These platforms serve as conduits for students to communicate their thoughts coherently, celebrate diversity in perspectives while seeking to navigate ambiguity in different contemporary and global issues.

As digital learners, Clementians also transverse into a world of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) during Social Studies lessons. With boundless opportunities to conduct extensive research on laptops and iPads, students are excited to sieve through and analyse different types of information. In addition, media literacy skills are inculcated through these impactful ICT-led lessons. Knowledge construction is further enriched through collaborative application tools in the classroom and on field-trips.
“A nation is great not by its size alone, it is the will, the cohesion, the stamina, the discipline of its people and their quality of their leaders which ensure its honourable place in history”
Late Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew
Echoing the wise words of our later Founding Father, our Social Studies Curriculum envisions Clementians to be competent decision-makers imbued with the Singapore Spirit. They will always be ready to embrace change in an increasingly complex globalised environment.
