Habits of Mind Programmes

To inculcate good habits in our pupils in a systematic yet ‘fun’ way and allow them to apply good habits in all subjects across the curriculum, the school identified the ‘Habits of Mind’ as a comprehensive strategy to help pupils. Through a whole-school approach, our pupils will adopt a common language and pick up a set of skills and attitudes that can be applied to their studies.

The 16 Habits of Mind were first identified by Arthur L Costa as a set of characteristics demonstrated by successful learners when they are confronted by problems, especially those which cannot be easily resolved.

Out of the 16 Habits of Mind, our school focuses on 10 habits which are more appropriate for pupils at the primary level. Each habit is first taught explicitly during the Form Teacher Guidance Period, followed by deliberate infusion across the curriculum to allow pupils to internalise them.

The diagram below shows the habits that are taught explicitly at different levels. To inculcate good habits in our pupils in a systematic yet ‘fun’ way and allow them to apply good habits in all subjects across the curriculum, the school identified the ‘Habits of Mind’ as a comprehensive strategy to help pupils.
